For whom Apple has released the MacBook Air 2019

All the characteristics on the basis of which they judge the performance of computers in the new MacBook Air either remained at the same level or even worsened. This is not speed-bump, this is optimization, and unlike many other phenomena with this name, no one was hurt from it.

2018 was a jubilee for the MacBook Air. It was 10 years old. In January 2008, Steve removed an ultra-thin laptop that was thought to have no future from a large envelope sparkling in the spotlights. MacBook Air brutally disappointed those who came to see something incredibly fantastic (a year before, on the same MacWorld, Steve introduced the first iPhone), but it was just a laptop. A half computer for double price. In the anniversary year for the MacBook Air, Apple did the unthinkable: a laptop that was loved and bought very well because of (a) its low price, (b) a normal keyboard, reliable and comfortable, and (c) nostalgia, deprived of all these qualities. Having fulfilled the most cherished desires of the solvent part of the population: Retina-display, USB-C with Thunderbolt 3, a new design with thinner frames around the screen.

It was a risky move: the most affordable new portable Mac rose $ 200. Those who needed a Mac, but the price was crucial, screamed from indignation and pain, forcing a sense of apocalypse. Apple killed MacBook Air! It is so expensive, but it has only two real connectors for all occasions. Bad, judging by the reviews, the keyboard, and the weak graphics subsystem! Horror – Apple is crazy. But it was this suicidal horror that became Apple’s best-selling laptop in 2018 (in the holiday quarter) and in the first half of 2019. And we decided to take measures to develop success in a very promising direction. Most complaints concerned the number of connectors. In addition to two USB-Cs, there was (and remains) a headphone jack. The second most discontented was the price. Someone complained about the lack of True Tone support (this is the ability of the screen to adapt to the lighting features, as a sheet of paper behaves in the real world). And so, on July 9, 2019, 9 months after the transformation of the MacBook Air, its new edition, improved and supplemented, was released.
After examining the issue, Apple came to the conclusion about the validity of public complaints about the price of the MacBook Air. Since then, when Jean-Louis Gassé sought to increase Mac’s prices, and they were sold two to three times more expensive than their cost, much has changed. Apple is not gaining a market advantage by lowering prices – but raising prices these days would be impractical. Therefore, in order to meet the poorest buyers and facilitate their parting with money, it was necessary to find a victim. The processor, screen, and keyboard could not be degraded. The case (from a unique aluminum alloy that was developed at Apple, incredibly durable, in which “every atom” was taken care of, and all this, 100%, made from recovered aluminum) – too.
To reduce the price of $ 100, they decided to use a cheaper, and because of this much slower, flash memory. Black Magic Disk Speed Test (black magic) revealed a decrease in the speed of reading from flash memory by 35%, from 2 GB / s to 1.3 GB / s. The write speed has increased slightly, from 0.9 GB / s to 1.0 GB / s. In real life, the difference in reading speed is almost imperceptible, in any case, it is several times faster than the HDD, and more recently, even this artificially reduced speed seemed breathtakingly fast. The latest classic MacBook Air (which cost $ 100 cheaper) was worse off with this and no one grumbled.
In addition, if you put next to the opened MacBook Air 2018 and 2019, even if you carefully and meticulously compare every cubic millimeter of their internal space, it is almost impossible to find the differences. Is that insignificant. The introduction of changes did not require serious labor costs – because of which the cost price decreased. In addition, due to the large circulation of Air’18, Intel probably bargained for greater discounts than before – the specialists in solving such issues raised by Steve and his students are very strong in this.
What has changed compared to the MacBook Air 2018
The most noticeable change is that True Tone is now supported on the MacBook Air. This can be noticed with the naked eye: by changing the level of white, this technology very close to the original simulates the reaction of real physical objects to a change in the nature of lighting. The absence of such a reaction is not perceived well by the subconscious. Those who use True Tone screens experience significant discomfort, returning to normal screens. If you do not mind putting yourself to the brutal experiments, you can turn off True Tone in the system settings – and see for yourself. True, the ability to turn off True Tone was not provided because of this. True Tone graphics professionals get in the way. It would seem, where are the professionals, and where is the MacBook Air? You will be very surprised, but Air, though with a creak and not too fast, copes with hard work.

The second change is the keyboard “using new materials”. Butterfly IV, or, as some of my colleagues call it, “a butterfly of 3.5 generation”. This makes sense, according to the design of the keyboard of the third generation and the three-and-a-half generation, they are identical in everything except the material of the protective membrane. In the keyboard of 2018, for the manufacture of protective membranes, (spectroscopic analysis results) were used either polyacetylene with polyurethane or thermoplastic polyurethane. The 2019 keyboard features a protective membrane (exactly the same shape) made of polyamide, which is better known as nylon. The 3.5 generation butterfly on the MacBook Air and on all 2019 MacBook Pros is similar. In the months since the moment when these keyboards were in the hands of users of criticism, it seems, it became less. One of three things: either Apple removes negative reviews, or nobody buys the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, or this small change has finally corrected the situation.
In the 2018 MacBook Air configurator, you could choose a flash memory of 1.5 Terabytes. The 2019 MacBook Air configurator no longer has this option. There is another, cheaper – 1.0 terabytes of flash memory. Otherwise, the MacBook Air 2018 and MacBook Air 2019 are almost the same.
